The mountain San Cayetano is located 10 kilometers from the town Crevillent in the province of Alicante. At the end of this blog you can see the pin-point where the hike starts.
Helene van Delft, one of the vendors at my Hippy Market in Rojales, asked me to join her on the hike, with her husband, daughter and friend. The hike is almost eight kilometers and took us three hours.
On the photo above you see the valley with (very small) the hermitage. On the second photo a closer look on the hermitage of San Cayetano, which was built in 1672 and restored in 2009.
We followed the signs of PR CV – 110. The hike right away starts steep, with some big rocks to climb.
Half way at your left you have a great view on another mountain I really want to climb soon: “Calossa de Segura”.
After 1 hour we arrived at the top (803 meters). From there you can see the Vega Baja area until the sea with the cities like Elche, Guardamar and even the pink lake of Torrevieja. And on the other side of the mountain the two towns Hondon de los Frailes and Casa Galiana.
Before descending the mountain I lay a stone at the highest point. Half way going down we arrived at a big tree. Helene warned me that at this landmark they walked two times the wrong way. When you see this tree (photo), take a left and after 20 meters you will see the stones again, you are following the whole route. Two stripes in white and yellow means you are going the right way, but are these stripes forming a cross you are going wrong!
When you arrive at orchards it’s still one hour more to walk back to your car.
And for the first time during hiking I saw a snake! I screamed like a little girl. It was for sure one and a half meter long and came towards us. But after my screaming it disappeared in the bushes.
At the end of the route you arrive at the hermitage and a free camping spot.
Below the pin-point where you have to park your car:
Great content! Keep up the good work!
